Is Twitter Becoming The BlackBerry of Social Networks?

A Harvard professor recently posted an article called ‘Twitter is rapidly becoming the BlackBerry of social media‘ and many are agreeing with the statement. The article references the recent removal of CEO Dick Costolo as well as struggling to grow from month to month. The professor goes on to say that Twitter may need a “clean sweep” to survive. While Twitter may be having some difficulties, it’s hard to believe (from our perspective) that they are becoming obsolete. With more than 300+M active users and 34% logging in more than once a day, the company is simply NOT doing what every social network needs to do – adapting to it’s changing demographics. What makes social networks great is their ability to pivot and add/delete/change features and functions on the fly. Facebook recently added an “author” feature to give more credit to bloggers posting and sharing their content. Why would they do this? Because content is king and by giving bloggers more of the spotlight they ensure their platform will have more content than the others. Instagram just added a “trending” feature to showcase real-time trends via hashtags on its platform. Why would they do this? Because of the success Twitter has had with users using the service to track real-time events and news. In the end, to say that Twitter may go the way of Blackberry is a bit extreme. The platform is still very relevant and used by millions every day. What needs to happen is more features and functions to continue to enable its users to incorporate the service into their every day social media lives. There’s only so many platforms an individual can use in a day, so they need to work to remain one of the top dogs. Ruff!
